We worked with East Sussex County Council to deliver this Education sector sports hall project.
Meeting Client Requirements
Robertsbridge Community College needed a brand-new steel framed sports hall to keep up with the demands from their busy centre. Not only did they need a 4-court sports hall built to Sport England standards, they also needed it to be fully functional with a kitchen, classrooms, WC’s and office space.
The Steel portal frame building was 10,000 sq.ft sports hall and the building also comprised of 6,000 sq.ft of classrooms, office space, Part M WCs and a kitchen.
Working Within a Live School Environment
The project was completed on time and to budget over a period of 26 weeks (not including a 4-week break for exams). As the school was open throughout the build period, health and safety was a huge priority throughout. Additionally, delivery methods needed careful planning to minimise disruption to pupils.
Optimised Building Design
The main envelope was created with an acoustic cladding system. This provided a superb environment for sports within the new hall. The building was constructed on an existing playground which was below the level of the adjacent playing field. Therefore we designed a bridge to extend across to the playing field footpath and provide access to the building for the first-floor facilities. Wheelchair users could then access both the lower school and upper school external facilities via the internal lift and the bridge link.
This project was completed within 6 months at a cost of £1m.
