Celebrating Women in Construction

At Kent Structures, we take pride in the talented and hardworking women who contribute to our success. From accounting and business management to design, surveying, and on-site construction trades, women play a vital role in every part of our business.

During Women in Construction Week, we are celebrating their contributions. In this post Megan Ronan offers insight into her experience as a Quantity Surveyor.

Finding a Career in Construction

Megan didn’t plan for a career in construction, but she found herself in the industry straight after sixth form. With her mother working in cladding sales, she applied for a junior role at her company and immediately fell in love with the industry. From there, she moved into estimating, where a carpentry firm sponsored her to pursue a degree in Quantity Surveying – leading her to the role she excels in today. “It was the right place at the right time,” Megan says, reflecting on her career journey. “I couldn’t imagine working in any other industry now.”

Overcoming Challenges in a Male-Dominated Industry

Starting out at just 17, fresh from an all-girls’ school, adjusting to a male-dominated environment wasn’t without its challenges. “At 19, I was the only woman in an office of over 10 men for about three years. But I took everything on the chin. I have three brothers, so I treated everyone the same way, and we all got along great.”

Having her mother as a role model helped Megan navigate the industry with confidence. “She’s been in construction since she was 17 herself – almost 30 years now.”

The Joy of Numbers and People

Megan’s role as a Quantity Surveyor suits her perfectly. “I’m a very organised and numbers-oriented person. Making cost savings on anything gives me so much joy.” But it’s not just the financial side she loves. “I’m a people person, so getting to chat with different people daily and visiting sites weekly is great.”

One of her proudest projects was managing the refurbishment of 20 washrooms across nine schools in South London – all within the tight six-week school holiday period. “It took so much coordination. Just driving to all the sites took a whole day! It was stressful, but the client was really happy with our work, which made it all worth it.”

Progress in Diversity & Inclusion

Megan has witnessed positive changes in the industry. “When I started as a Junior Estimator, I was the only woman in the company for three years. After five years, there were five of us! There are so many more female Quantity Surveyors now. Even my university course had twice as many women compared to when I was studying.”

Looking Ahead

Megan has found her niche in Quantity Surveying and doesn’t see herself moving to another role anytime soon. “I was an Estimator for five years, but Quantity Surveying is much better suited to me. I think I’ll be in this role for the foreseeable future.”

Her advice to women considering a career in construction? “It’s full-on at times. Attention to detail and a thick skin help. But the job satisfaction is incredible when you see a build you helped make happen.”

Megan also believes apprenticeships are key to supporting more women in the industry. “Providing more opportunities for women to gain hands-on experience will make a huge difference.”

Changing Perceptions

Megan wants more people to realise how rewarding a career in construction can be. “There’s nothing like seeing a finished product that you helped create.”

At Kent Structures, we couldn’t agree more. We’re proud of Megan and all the women who help drive our business forward, proving every day that construction is a place for talent, skill, and dedication – regardless of gender.
