Barn Elms Sports Centre forms part of one of the largest civil engineering projects in London. As such, it is the only permanent above-ground structure in the scheme. It is located on a 52 acre field dedicated to the practice of various sports and activities.
The building is formed of two modules. The first, has an area of 620m2. Located on the ground floor, it includes an office, reception, storage room, café, kitchen, toilets, changing rooms and plant room. Additionally, there is a second office on the first floor over the reception.
The second module is a 120m2 gym which is connected to the main building with a canopy link. A canopy surrounds the building along the west and south elevations.
Given the building’s proximity to the River Thames, we had to construct a foundation that would be suitable and cost-effective. We improved the ground using vibro-stone columns with shallow lightly reinforced foundations to carry the primary steel frame. We designed a lightweight steel frame and a cladding system to span from the main steel columns. This removed the need for much of the secondary steel work normally required.
The envelope is highly-insulated and conventional internal ceilings were omitted. This provided a cost-saving, as well as providing the industrial look popular in modern buildings. Extensive heat recovery ventilation systems were installed as well as underfloor heating throughout.
The project was contracted under the NEC form of contract and was highly supervised under a strict quality management system. This ensured delivery of the highest quality end product.
Kent Structures were the principal lead designer as well as the main build contractor.
